Biography
Anaïs Zhang—known as Anais Z. in the digital realm—is a Chinese-born, French artist with a Master’s in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.
Now based in Biarritz on the shores of the Basque Country, she draws inspiration from the landscapes and faces encountered throughout her travels—from the snow-capped mountains of Tibet to the narrow streets of Macau and the wide grasslands of the American Midwest.
The series Le Poème de la Mer often features figures seen from behind, absorbed in the spectacle of the ocean. In a way, Anaïs does not paint the landscape directly, but rather a world filtered through someone else’s gaze. Through the artist’s brush, the daydreams and quiet contemplations of these passersby take on color.
In La Belle Époque, she breathes color and life into forgotten moments captured by her great-grandfather-in-law, a pioneering French photographer of the early 1900s.
Most recently, Anaïs has dedicated herself to Heroji—a multidisciplinary project where she summons twelve mythic guardians of nature, reviving ancestral stories through the lens of contemporary digital art.
Her work weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination—and has been exhibited in galleries worldwide.
